Overview

At Mahaska Health The Patient Care Technician participates with the interdisciplinary care team in the delivery of the patient's plan of care under the immediate supervision of the RN, including assisting with OB procedures, providing hands on patient care, and reporting pertinent information to the appropriate team members.  Facilitates the smooth operation of the nursing unit by coordinating non-clinical operations such as maintenance of patient charts and unit records, the efficient processing of unit information, and maintenance of unit supplies.

Responsibilities

Essential Job Functions include but are not limited to:

 

  • Assists with the maintenance and stocking of supplies, checking for outdated supplies, within established budgetary guidelines to promote cost effective patient care.
  • Sorts and stores incoming surgical instruments and supplies in identified locations.
  • Begins inventory on assigned shift to ensure adequacy of supplies in all L&D areas.
  • Integrates principles of Family-Centered care into practice. Care is directed to maintaining birth, postpartum and newborn care as a normal life event.

Assists the family to provide a positive birthing experience and hospital stay they desire.

  • Demonstrates commitment to personal growth and competence to maintain knowledge of current procedures and new trends.
  • Provides clerical support for the department by.
  • Assembles and dis-assembles patient charts.
  • Answers telephone and greets customers in a courteous manner.
  • Maintains knowledge and operation of infant security protocols.
  • Enters Birth Worksheet, Hep B vaccines, and Hearing Screens into state databases.

Assists the nurse with the care of the patient to facilitate a positive experience throughout the patient's stay. The mother is encouraged to provide care for her newborn whenever possible. 

  • Transports patient as requested according to the patient transport procedure.
  • Helps lift and position patients safely.
  • Holds extremities of patients as directed by circulator using good alignment to prevent injuries.
  • Limits conversation over sterile field in keeping with standards of aseptic techniques.
  • Participates in educating and orienting of new staff members as assigned.
  • Assists in purposefully rounding patients as needed or directed by RN.
  • Under the direction of the nurse, assists with the care of the newborn (i.e. bath, BP, temps).
  • Under the direction of the nurse, assists with the care of the adult (i.e. bathing assistance, temp, vitals, blood glucose monitoring, etc.).
  • Adjusts to changes in team/patient priorities as determined by the charge nurse.
  • Assists in answering call lights and responding promptly.

Using his/her knowledge of the principles of growth and development and related needs, communicates and intervenes in a manner appropriate to the age of the patient served which includes:

  • Birth – 28 days                   Neonate

  • 6 – 12 Years                      School-aged

  • Collects and applies age-specific data.
  • Performs tasks/procedures, uses equipment in an age-appropriate manner.
  • Communicates and works with others in an age-appropriate manner.
  • Attends required safety programs.
  • Appropriately and consistently use the personal protective equipment required of the job.
  • Knows and can demonstrate departmental emergency procedures for fire, disaster, and other emergency situations.
  • Actively participates in regularly scheduled drills and regulatory safety standards.
  • Completes and appropriately routes incident reports in a timely manner.
  • Uses equipment safely and appropriately.
  • Reports and removes unsafe equipment/furniture.
  • Asks for assistance when needed to assure safety for all involved.
  • Maintains a safe working environment and practices safe working habits.
  • Conduct self in accordance with Mahaska Health Partnership's confidentiality policy; ensuring to follow all MHP training guidelines in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996.
  • Maintain a cooperative working relationship with employees, visitors, medical staff, and patients, keeping in mind the person’s unique needs within their age category (refer to Mahaska Health’s Age Specific Standards of Care Policy).
  • Ability to deal with confidential information.
  • Must be able to perform the physical demands of the job.
  • Maintains regular and reliable attendance. Attend meetings, as requested.
  • All other duties as assigned or requested.

Qualifications

Requirements include but are not limited to:

  • High school diploma, GED or equivalent preferred.
  • Must have completed the CNA course or have equivalent education and/or experience.
  • Must be listed on the Iowa Nurse Aide Registry. Verification (by transcript or certification) of successful completion of Nurse Aide I course; successful completion of Nursing Fundamentals course or successful completion of the Competency Test. Nurse Aide II-Advanced course is preferred and may be provided post-hire.
  • Required to be current in BLS (Basic Life Support) by the standards of the American Heart Association.
  • Required to show proof of having completed Mandatory Reporter course at time of hire or attend within 6 months of start date.
  • Must adhere to all training requirements as mandated by Federal, State, and Professional licensure and regulatory standards.
